While ISO 9001 is a standard within the ISO 9000 family of quality management standards, ISO 9000 is a series, or family. There is also a separate standard called ISO 9000 that is part of the ISO 9000 family. It is the global norm for a quality management system, or QMS. A business must adhere to the requirements outlined in the ISO 9001 Standard in order to receive certification to the standard. Organizations use the standard to show that they can continuously improve and consistently deliver goods and services that satisfy customers and legal obligations. The ISO 9000 family of standards include a number of publications, however only ISO 9001 is a standard that needs to be certified.
