Functional job analysis

Functional job analysis: what is it?

One way to collect particular information about a job is through functional job analysis. The unique information derived from the employee’s actions and behaviors is used to generate a job description.

The functional job analysis method of job analysis was created by the US Department of Labor (DOL). It’s used to look at the qualifications needed for a job, find the best applicant, assess the applicant’s training and abilities, and place them in the appropriate role. This tactic comprises a comprehensive examination of an individual’s skills and general credentials in relation to the requirements and standards of their particular employment within a larger context.

Both the public and private sectors utilize this type of job analysis to ensure that current employees and job hopefuls can carry out their duties in a safe and effective manner.

During a functional job analysis, data will be gathered about jobs and responsibilities, tools and equipment, the workplace, and other topics.

A “functional job description” is a document that lists the duties and requirements of a job role. The tasks to be completed and their evaluation process are also included in the text.

The objective of functional analysis

Employees are a company’s most valuable asset. Companies seek to hire the best candidates because they are aware of this. A comprehensive job analysis ensures that the business hires the proper people. Assessing a candidate’s work skills, education, experience, and job performance aids in selecting the best candidates for the company. Employees are also informed about the work at hand and the qualifications needed to complete it successfully by functional job analysis.

This approach emphasizes the employees’ individual strengths and weaknesses. Because of this, it is a useful tool for employers to evaluate the impact of each position on the overall operations of their business. By performing assessments from this angle, businesses and organizations may look at nearly every aspect of a job and how a person’s distinct combination of social, mental, and physical skills impacts their effectiveness in that role. Functional analysis can also be used to manage the transition of injured workers going back to work alongside their medical providers, according to the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.
